Barishal district is criss-crossed by numerous rivers, earning it the famous nickname 'Dhan-Nodi-Khal, Ei tine Barishal' (Rice, River, and Canal make Barishal). Located in south-central Bangladesh, this region—formerly known as Bakerganj—is now a major administrative division. The city stands on the banks of the Kirtankhola River, an offshoot of the Arial Khan within the Ganges (Padma) delta. Established as a municipality in 1876 and upgraded to a City Corporation in 2002, it serves as a vital river port linked to Dhaka (117 km north) and Chattogram to the southeast.

Due to its strategic location and easy access to marine and riverine navigation, Barishal has become a key transshipment center for rice, hides, and pulses. The city's industrial landscape includes flourishing sectors like pharmaceuticals, textiles, and bakery products.

Geographically, Barishal experiences a maximum average temperature of 35.1°C and a minimum of 12.1°C, with an annual rainfall of 1955 mm. As the divisional headquarters, the city covers about 58 sq km and consists of 30 wards and 50 mahallas, standing as a historic gateway to the Bay of Bengal.
