Jashore is the first district of undivided Bengal, established in 1786 as part of the ancient Samatata region. Geographically, it is located in the southwestern zone of Bangladesh, situated between 88°40' to 89°50' E longitude and 22°47' to 23°47' N latitude. The Benapole International Land Port, the largest in the country, is located within this district. Jashore town stands on the banks of the Bhairab River and is part of the Moribund Delta. It is bordered by Jhenaidah to the north, Narail and Magura to the east, Khulna and Satkhira to the south, and India to the west. Historically, it was an independent prefecture from 1674, ruled by famous administrators such as Vikramaditya, Pratapaditya, and Raja Sitaram Ray. In 1881, Khulna was separated from Jashore to form its own district.
It was well known as oldest prefecture of India . In second Century, the southern part of the Mouribund delta located in map of "Telemi" is the present Jessore.
According to General Kaningham , this area was named as "Jasor" whose meaning in Bengali is "Setu" . It was firstly named as "Jessore" during Raja Bikromaditto , the father of Protapoditto.
Bengali word "Jasho" and "hore" means "Gourob hani" in Bengali language , which turns this present Jessore . In 1984 it was reformed as present Jessore.
It consists of 8 upazila , 8 Pourashava ( Municipality ) , 1423 nos. Mouza/ Mohalla and 1477 nos of villages . Area of the district is 6674 Sq.km. , where is 4.5 % of the total area of the country. Jessore is famous for production of various types of flower , which covers more than 30% demand of the Country . Literacy rate of Jessore is 70% On the basis of area, Jessore district is 24th position in Bangladesh.
There are some prominent rivers in this district namley Kopothakko , Bhairab, Chitra, Ichamoti , Harihor , Dadra , Betraboti & Kodla.
Jessore Municipality / pourashava contains 9 words and 73 Mohalla. In 1964 Jessore Pourashova / Municipality was formed.
Jessore district is famous for "Khejur Gur" . It is well known for "Jamtala sweet meat" . This district have many recreation place / Picnic spots, such as Jessore picnic corner , Jess Garden , Binodia family park at Jessore Cantonment , Monohorpur boat club / park . Jessore is a food surplus area of Bangladesh. Moreover vegetable production of the district is remarkable than other district of Bangladesh . Food surplus amount was 4,93,365 M.T in Jessore during 1999-2000 FY.
Jessore district is one of the potential district in Bangladesh in all respect. The intercommunication system of the district is enormously developed in last three decades. As a result, most of the villages are Jeepable except a few exceptions.
