Narail is one of the smallest yet most significant districts in Bangladesh. It is bounded by Jessore to the west and south, Khulna to the south, Gopalganj to the east, and Magura to the north. Established as a sub-division in 1861 and a district on March 1, 1984, Narail consists of 3 Upazilas, 3 Municipalities, and 38 Unions. It holds a proud history, being the 2nd largest home to freedom fighters in Bangladesh, with nearly 2,000 locals participating in the Liberation War. Agriculture is the primary livelihood, with rice and jute as the main crops. The district is blessed by the Chitra, Nabaganga, and Madhumati rivers, which are abundant in various freshwater fish. The Government Victoria College is the premier educational institution. Narail is also a powerhouse in sports, famously known as the home of legendary cricketer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. Narail is the birthplace of world-renowned artist S.M. Sultan, dancer Uday Shankar, Bir Sreshtho Shahid Lance Nayek Nur Mohammad Sheikh, literary figure Nihar Ranjan Gupta, and minstrel Bijoy Sarkar. Notable tourist spots include 'Niribili' in Lohagara and 'Arunima' in Kalia. The district is also famous for its traditional milk-based sweets and boasts a well-developed communication network reaching almost every village.
