Dinajpur district city stands on the bank of the Punarbhaba river and is located at 25°14' - 25°38' North and 88°05' - 88°28' East. Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts are to the north. Gaibandha and Joypurhat districts are to the south. Nilphamari and Rangpur districts are to the east, and West Bengal of India is to the west. It consists of thirteen upazilas, eight municipalities, and one hundred and one unions. The British soldiers captured this area in 1765. In 1783, it was established as a separate collectorate for administrative work. Mr. Mariot was the first collector. Dinajpur Municipality was established in 1869. The south-west side of the district is adjacent to the Indian border.
