The name Sunamganj is derived from its founder, Sipahi Sunamuddin, who established a bazaar on the bank of the river Surma. The district headquarters stands on the bank of the Surma river, located at 25.030869° N and 91.403761° E. Established as a subdivision in 1877, it was declared a district on March 1, 1984. The area spans 3,747.18 sq km under the Sylhet Division. It comprises 11 Upazilas: Sunamganj Sadar, Derai, Chhatak, Jamalgonj, Dharmapasha, Madhyanagar, Jagannathpur, Tahirpur, Sulla, Doarabazar, and Bishwambharpur, along with 4 Municipalities. During the Liberation War, Sunamganj was under Sectors 5 and 11. The district is rich in cultural heritage, home to ethnic groups like the Manipuri, Khasia, Garo, and Hajong. Famous for its 'Haor' landscape, Tanguar Haor is its largest inland water body. Sunamganj is a major hub for freshwater fish, stone, and sand industries. It is the birthplace of legendary figures like Hason Raja, Shah Abdul Karim, Radha Raman Dutta, and Abdus Samad Azad. Key tourist attractions include Tanguar Haor, Jadukata River, and the Hason Raja Memorial Museum.
